Key points
- For a low fever, the right things to do are to give fluids and to dress the child in loose, breathable clothes so the body can give off its heat.
- Do not bathe in hot or cold water. Cold water makes the skin contract and shuts the heat inside the body.
- Wiping the body down with alcohol is wrong for the same reason — it too makes the skin contract.
- To bring the temperature down, bathe the child in lukewarm water, so the heat leaves with the water as it evaporates.
